About the Department

The Department was established in the year 1960 at the Jaswant College, Jodhpur. In 1963 it was shifted to Jaipur in the Vigyan Bhawan of the University of Rajasthan, and finally to its newly constructed building in October 1966.Earlier, the Department had received generous financial support from Ford Foundation (USA), Rockefeller Foundation (USA), National Institute of Health (USA), United States Department of Agriculture, PL480 (USA), UGC-ULP, DRS, COSIST, SAP, DST- FIST (Phase I). The Department was recognized as the Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS Phase-I) in Zoology in the year 2005. The Department has completed CAS (Phase II) under UGC and DSTFIST program (Phase II) under DST in subsequent years. Besides the major funding, several faculty members have received financial support from the different funding agencies like UGC, CSIR, BRNS, ICMR, DST, DBT and MHFW. Research scholars include NET (UGC & CSIR) JRF, ICMR-JRF, DSTINSPIRE Fellows, Rajiv Gandhi Fellows, Post Doctoral Fellows, Research Associates and Women Scientist awardees.The Department is known for its pioneering research in the fields of Radiation Biology, Reproductive Biology, Cancer Biology, Environmental Biology & Toxicology, Entomology, Microbiology and Development Biology. The faculty has been awarded prestigious fellowships including DAAD, AvHumboldt, Full Bright, Smithsonian etc. The Department has been regularly organizing International & National Conferences, 'Ramaswami Memorial Lectures' and invited talks by Eminent Scientist in the different areas. The Department has celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2010. The alumni hold various important positions in teaching, research and administrative services in India and abroad. An Alumni Meet held in year 2018 & 2019 with good participation from the alumni.


nfrastructural Facilities

The Department has a whole range of sophisticated instruments to facilitate quality research. A Central Instruments Facility is available for the use by all research Scholars. The Department has procured sophisticated instruments viz; includes Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, RT- PCR, HPLC, Autoanalyser, Fluorescent Microscope with Digital Microphotography, Refrigerated Micro-Centrifuge, ELISA Reader, Deep Freezer, Refrigerated High Speed Centrifuge. C0 Incubator, Blood Analyzer, 2 Chemiluminscent Analyzer, 2 D Electrophoresis system, UV Transilluminator, Lyophiliser, Gel Doc System, Horizontal Gel Electrophoresis with power supply, Rotatory Microtome, Tissue Homogenizer, GM Counter, Minus 80 Degree Deep Freezer, Water Purification System, Biosafety Cabinet, Probe Sonicator with Probes, Vacuum Dryer, Nanospectrophotometer, Multi color Flowcytometer as well as facility for neuro behavioral studies. In addition, it has developed recently Tissue Culture Laboratory. The Department has 18 different laboratories where basic and applied researches are being conducted. Adjacent to the main building of the Department, the Animal House is there for the experimental animals.There is Central Computer Facility with internet connectivity for the PG Students, Smart Classroom, excellent Museum, L. S. Ramaswami Seminar Hall with the capacity of 200 persons and a rich library with a large collection of reference/text books and journals. Study of various herbs for the evaluation of anti oxidants, anti cancer, and radiation anti fertility, anti diabetic and anti atherosclerotic properties, toxicity of environmental pollutants and bioremediation are also being carried out. Besides teaching and research, the department also organizes enthusiastically many extracurricular activities for the holistic development of the students. Recently the Department has also started publishing its annual magazine highlighting all academic, research and extracurricular activities.
